| Today, we visited Windy Hill Orchard in
York, South Carolina. Fritz and Catherine Gusmer, also known as Johnny
Appleseed and Mrs. Appleseed, started this apple orchard to keep Fritz
close to home. Fritz is a great example of today's theme, doing
everything as unto the Lord. Fritz and Catherine give educational and
evangelical tours of their orchard, and kids come from miles away to
these fun events. The tour starts with Fritz telling the story of Johnny
Appleseed. We learned about how he traveled all over the pioneer
frontier planting apple seeds and teaching people about God. Fritz also
showed us how to use his antique cider press.
Next, everyone gets into a wagon and goes on a hayride around the
orchard. It was a lot of fun seeing the pigs being fed.
After the hayride, each group gets to make their own scarecrow. You
use an old shirt and a pair of pants, a pair of pantyhose, and a lot of
hay. Everyone had a lot of fun making their scarecrow, and you even get
to keep it.
Once the hayride is over, we got to bag our own apples from the bins,
or pick a pumpkin from their pumpkin patch.
To end the tour, everyone goes to the snack tent and enjoys some
tasty treats: apple cider sippers and apple cider donuts. They sell
these in their store, as well as apple pies, apple bread, eggs, and a
lot of other things.
We had a lot of fun at Windy Hill Orchard learning about Johnny
Appleseed and all the things that you can do with apples. I hope you had
as much fun as I did. See you later. |
