    What is homeschooling like?

Filed under: Homeschooling - Nathan @ 9:48 pm

Sometimes people ask me, “What is homeschooling like?” I usually tell them that on a good day we work for 4-5 hours then I have the rest of the day to do what I like.  This year we started working with a new program called Classical Conversations.  There is a lot of memorization. Most of it is fun. There are timeline cards with great pictures or art that have to do with a certain event in history. For example, Creation is the first card and it has a part of the painting from the Sistine Chapel on the card.  In history we are also studying the History of The United States.  We started with Columbus and we are now at George Washington becoming our first president.  I think George Washington was really cool. I am also learning, human anatomy, grammer, latin, math tables, and drawing. My dad teaches us drawing.  I meet once a week with 3 other families. We do science and history projects, drawing class, and learn our memory work for the next week.  It is pretty intense but I am learning a bunch. What is your school day like? I love to hear about other people’s experiences. Do you like learning other languages or do you like science and history? Tell me about your school day.

    See you later,

    Nathan

Hi! My mom is typing. Here is my school day. I am learning how to read and learning basic math. We use the ACE program. First, we sing school songs. These songs are about the different animals that start with the sound I am learning. For example, when I learned the hard g sound I sang a song about a gerbil. Then my mom told me some facts about gerbils and also read a story about a giant gerbil who patiently waited for a peice of fudge. Then I work on some worksheets to learn how to form the letter “g” and read out loud different words that contained that sound. My favorite subject is Math. I would like to do Math first, but my mom says it is better to do it second.
On Mondays, I go to Oklahoma history class with other homeschoolers in my area. This week we learned about the three main rivers in Oklahoma.
We like to go to the library where I listen to a story and get lots of books. I learned some Spanish from a CD.
We are usually done by lunch time. The rest of the day I like play computer games, and listen to Adventures in Odyssey.

Here in Colorado we have a great restaurant called The Cliffhouse, you should visit it sometime and put it on your show.
